In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the herb is considered invigorating to Qi (pronounced like chee). Qi is the energy force in the body, and there are different types of it connected to different systems. It’s thought that schisandra berry can support different areas in the body according to TCM. It supports the Lung Qi, can support fluid production in the body, calms the spirit and tonifies the heart. Some applications of the fruit in TCM include treatments for fatigue, cough, breathing troubles, and even impotence issues in men. TCM herbal treatments always combine herbs to create a specific affect, and so in these cases, schisandra is not used on its own.
